Bailey–Del Mar Campaign Blames Pritzker After Drug Overdoses at Pinckneyville Prison (Louisville, IL) – A series of drug overdoses at the Pinckneyville Correctional Center has ignited political criticism from Republican gubernatorial candidates Darren Bailey and Aaron Del Mar, who say the incident reflects deeper failures within Illinois’ prison system under Gov. JB Pritzker.
According to initial reports, six inmates overdosed Saturday after being exposed to illegal drugs inside the downstate facility. State officials have not released details on how the substances entered the prison or whether any staff actions are being investigated.
The Bailey–Del Mar campaign issued a statement Monday condemning the administration’s handling of the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and arguing that the latest incident highlights systemic weaknesses.
“Let’s be clear: this is what happens when a governor is more focused on political games than public safety,” Del Mar said in the statement. “Under JB Pritzker, the Department of Corrections has become a leadership vacuum. Drugs making their way into a state prison is not an accident — it’s a symptom of an administration that has lost control.”
Del Mar criticized the governor’s criminal justice policies, claiming they have “weakened discipline” and “demoralized” correctional staff. He argued that both officers and inmates are put at risk when security lapses go unaddressed.
The campaign also pledged a stricter approach if elected. “When Darren Bailey and I take office, that changes on day one,” Del Mar said. “We will restore order, support correctional officers, and make sure prisons operate like prisons — not playgrounds.”
IDOC has not yet released a public statement regarding Saturday’s overdoses, and no updates were available on the condition of the affected inmates.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about staffing, drug smuggling, and safety conditions in Illinois’ correctional facilities — issues likely to remain central in the upcoming gubernatorial race.
