CPS Magnet Schools Earn Record Number of National Honors for Academic Excellence (Chicago, IL) – Chicago Public Schools is celebrating a record-setting year after 10 district magnet schools earned national honors from Magnet Schools of America, marking the highest number of CPS schools ever recognized in a single year.
In addition to the school awards, one CPS principal was named Regional VI Principal of the Year, while another CPS high school retained its status as a nationally certified demonstration school.
“These recognitions are powerful evidence of the momentum building across Chicago Public Schools,” said CPS CEO and Superintendent Dr. Macquline King. “Our schools are rebounding and redefining what is possible for student success.”
Schools of Excellence
The following CPS schools were named 2026 Schools of Excellence:
- William C. Goudy Technology Academy
- LaSalle II World Language Magnet Elementary School
- Mark Sheridan Math & Science Academy
- Ole A. Thorp Elementary Scholastic Academy
Schools of Distinction
The following schools earned 2026 Schools of Distinction honors:
- Chappell World Language Magnet School
- Hawthorne Scholastic Academy
- Jonathan Burr Elementary School
- Joseph Jungman STEM Magnet School
- Newberry Math & Science Academy
- William H. Brown STEM Magnet Elementary School
CPS officials also announced that Chicago High School for Agricultural Science retained its status as a Nationally Certified Demonstration School, a designation awarded to schools that exceed national magnet school standards and serve as models for schools nationwide.
Principal Earns Regional Recognition
William H. Brown STEM Magnet Elementary School Principal Latoya Lyons was named Magnet Schools of America’s 2026 Regional VI Principal of the Year, representing a 12-state Midwest region.
“It is validating to know that the work is making a difference and making an impact in the lives of both our students and our staff,” Lyons said.
Brown Elementary has become one of CPS’ most notable turnaround success stories after receiving federal Magnet Schools Assistance Program funding in 2017 to transition into a STEM-focused school.
The school now features advanced academic programming, intervention services, three computer labs, and a full broadcast studio designed to introduce students to journalism, video production, and broadcasting.
National Recognition Process
According to Magnet Schools of America, schools receiving merit awards are evaluated based on academic achievement, diversity initiatives, integrated curriculum, and family and community partnerships.
Schools of Excellence are eligible for additional national awards, including the prestigious Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, which includes a $5,000 prize.
