DuPage County Sheriff Charges Two in Naperville Home Invasion That Left Dog Dead (Wheaton, IL) – Two individuals are facing multiple felony charges after DuPage County authorities say a home invasion in unincorporated Naperville left a resident injured and his three-year-old dog fatally shot.
Andre Bridges, 35, of the 1300 block of North Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb, and Nicole Smith, 40, of the 1500 block of Watkins Lane in Naperville, appeared in First Appearance Court on Wednesday. Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state’s motion to deny pretrial release for both defendants.
According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday, July 27, to the 30W000 block of Capistrano Court for a reported home invasion.
Investigators said the resident was allegedly pepper-sprayed inside his apartment during the incident, and his three-year-old dog was fatally shot.
Deputies secured the scene, rendered aid to the victim, canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses, and collected evidence. The Sheriff’s Office Forensic Identification Unit and Animal Control also assisted with the investigation.
The case was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division. Through interviews, investigative leads, and the execution of search warrants, detectives identified Bridges and Smith as suspects.
The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following felony charges against both defendants:
Home Invasion – Causing Injury (Class X felony)
Home Invasion While Armed with a Firearm (Class X felony)
Aggravated Cruelty to Animals (Class 4 felony)
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No FOID Card (Class 4 felony)
Sheriff James Mendrick credited multiple divisions within the sheriff’s office for their response and investigation.
“This case highlights the outstanding teamwork between our Patrol Division, Detectives, Forensic Identification Unit, Animal Control, and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office,” Mendrick said. “Our patrol deputies responded quickly to secure the scene and preserve critical evidence, allowing Detective Natyshok and the investigative team to rapidly identify those responsible and obtain felony charges. Their professionalism and dedication resulted in an exceptional investigative outcome.”
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin condemned the alleged actions described in the case.
“The level of cruelty alleged in this case is heartbreaking and extremely disturbing,” Berlin said. “The unprovoked attack on the victim and subsequent shooting of his defenseless companion, as alleged against the defendants, shows a disturbing level of cruelty and disregard for both human and animal life and a shocking willingness to cause physical and emotional pain to others. In DuPage County we have zero tolerance for the type of behavior alleged in this case and we will prosecute the defendants to the fullest extent of the law.”
Berlin added that while the victim’s dog was killed, authorities were grateful the victim was not more seriously injured and thanked the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for its investigation.
The sheriff’s office said the case remains an active criminal prosecution and that no additional information will be released while it is pending before the court.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
