Hernandez Re-Elected as Illinois Democratic Party Chair, Outlines Agenda for Next Four Years (Springfield, IL) – Members of the Democratic State Central Committee unanimously re-elected Lisa Hernandez as chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois (DPI), signaling continued support for her leadership as the party prepares for a critical election cycle.

In a statement following her re-election, Hernandez emphasized her focus on working families, first-generation Americans, and voters across the state, framing her leadership as rooted in advocacy and accountability.

“Every voter I meet, every nervous first-generation American, and every family struggling to make ends meet is why I serve as Democratic Party of Illinois Chair,” Hernandez said. “Continuing to fight for those folks and hold Republicans accountable is why I ran for re-election.”

Hernandez pointed to what she described as a transformation of the state party during her tenure. Once viewed as less accessible, DPI has evolved into a more expansive political operation, she said, with efforts aimed at organizing voters statewide and strengthening local party infrastructure.

Among the initiatives highlighted were statewide data outreach efforts, annual collaboration with the Illinois Democratic County Chairs Association on candidate recruitment, and the creation of regional summits in Southern and Western Illinois. Hernandez also cited the development of an internship pipeline that has transitioned participants into full-time staff roles.

“We’ve flipped seats, built stronger coalitions, and expanded our reach,” she said. “Four years and three successful galas later, our party has gotten bigger, better and stronger.”

Her re-election comes as Illinois Democrats look ahead to the upcoming midterm elections, where party leaders aim to maintain control across multiple levels of government. Key priorities include re-electing Gov. J.B. Pritzker, defending all statewide constitutional offices, and supporting Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton in a bid for the U.S. Senate.

Democrats are also seeking to preserve their 14-3 advantage in Illinois’ congressional delegation, while defending and potentially expanding their supermajorities in the state legislature. Several congressional seats are expected to be competitive, with four currently open.

Beyond the 2026 midterms, Hernandez said the party is already looking toward future election cycles. Plans include expanding programming, increasing voter engagement efforts, and recruiting candidates for the 2027 elections.

“With continued organizing and outreach, we’re positioning ourselves not just for this year, but for long-term success,” Hernandez said.

As the political landscape in Illinois continues to evolve, Hernandez’s renewed leadership will play a central role in shaping the Democratic Party’s strategy in the years ahead.
