Illinois Freedom Caucus Applauds End of Federal Shutdown, Blames Democrats for Delay (Springfield, IL) – The Illinois Freedom Caucus welcomed news Wednesday that a deal has been reached to reopen the federal government, calling the conclusion of what it dubbed the “Schumer Shutdown” proof that the closure was driven by politics, not policy.
In a statement, the conservative group accused Democratic leaders in Washington of stalling negotiations until after last week’s off-year elections.
“Just days after the off-year elections, the Democrats in Washington D.C. have suddenly decided to support a clean continuing resolution to reopen the federal government, proving the ‘Schumer Shutdown’ was never a principled fight,” the caucus said. “Their first and only priority is the acquisition of political power.”
The group praised congressional Republicans for securing a continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the federal government through the end of January 2026. The Illinois Freedom Caucus said the short-term funding measure prevents Democrats from pushing through a larger spending package before the holidays and maintains current discretionary spending levels first set in 2023.
The caucus credited conservative members of Congress for “blocking an omnibus spending bill for the fourth time” since 2024 and said the agreement keeps efforts to limit government spending on track.
In addition to federal spending issues, the caucus also used the statement to renew criticism of immigration and social policies under former President Joe Biden and Illinois Democrats.
“We are more determined than ever to put an end to the harmful Biden-era policies that have enabled mass illegal immigration into our state,” the group said. “We will not back down in our efforts to stop funding illegal immigrant healthcare and to require Illinois law enforcement to work with ICE – not against them.”
The Illinois Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative Republican state lawmakers, frequently aligns itself with the national Freedom Caucus and has been an outspoken critic of both the Biden administration and Democratic leadership in Springfield.
