New Lenox Debuts Giant Lighted Penguin at Christmas in the Commons (New Lenox, IL) – Holiday celebrations in New Lenox just got a little brighter — and a lot taller. The Village this week unveiled a towering new attraction for its annual Christmas in the Commons display: a 36-foot-tall illuminated penguin named Floyd, now the largest lighted penguin in the United States.

Covered in 38,186 LED lights, Floyd greets visitors at the entrance to the Village Commons, joining another record-setting favorite — a 36-foot-tall lighted Santa Claus, also the largest of its kind in the country and glowing with 18,500 LED lights.

The two massive figures serve as the centerpiece of the free holiday display, which transforms the entire Commons into a walk-through winter wonderland. Visitors can wander beneath glowing arches, pose for photos in oversized ornaments, and watch a synchronized light show choreographed to Christmas music.

The light display accompanies the Village’s Christmas in the Commons festival, held every Saturday and Sunday in December through Dec. 21. Families can enjoy photos with Santa, horse-drawn wagon rides, a holiday market, synthetic ice skating, and other festive activities.

Admission, parking, and all attractions are free, making the display one of the region’s most accessible and popular holiday destinations.
