Rep. Evans Hails Launch of Chicago State University Football Program (Chicago, IL) – State Rep. Marcus C. Evans Jr. is celebrating the launch of Chicago State University’s football program, calling it a historic milestone and a key step toward strengthening the long-term sustainability of the South Side institution.

Evans, a Democrat from Chicago and a Chicago State alumnus, said the addition of football represents more than an expansion of athletics, describing it as part of a broader effort to transform CSU into a destination university that serves students while also engaging the surrounding community.

“The launch of the CSU football team is a major step in the right direction to sustain this university,” Evans said. “A football program is more than just a sport; it builds school spirit, increases enrollment, and creates space for the community to connect with the campus.”

The new program adds to CSU’s existing athletic offerings, which include golf, volleyball, cross country and track, along with men’s and women’s basketball.

Evans also outlined a broader vision for a fully integrated campus that extends beyond athletics. He pointed to the potential for a housing village modeled after urban universities such as the University of Illinois Chicago, as well as additional developments including a technology park, hotel, convention space and medical facilities.

“Chicago State University deserves all of the critical pieces that help sustain a modern university,” Evans said, emphasizing the role CSU plays as a community anchor on the South Side.

The state lawmaker praised CSU President Dr. Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott, crediting her leadership and long-term vision for positioning the university for growth. Evans said Scott’s approach stands out among higher education leaders and called for adequate funding and institutional support to help elevate CSU’s status.

“Dr. Scott has the expertise and resolve to move this university forward,” Evans said. “She deserves the resources necessary to solidify CSU as a top-tier institution.”

Evans said he plans to continue working with university leadership and fellow state officials to secure the legislative support and funding needed to advance CSU’s development and ensure its future success.
