Sierra Club of Illinois Endorses Peters in 2nd Congressional District Race (Chicago, IL) – The Sierra Club of Illinois has endorsed State Sen. Robert Peters in his bid for Congress in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District, citing his environmental record and support for climate-focused legislation.
The endorsement was announced Monday as Peters campaigns for the open seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly.
In a statement, the Sierra Club praised Peters’ work in state government, pointing to his role in advancing environmental and clean energy policies in Springfield. The organization said it views Peters as a strong advocate for addressing climate change at a time when federal environmental regulations face potential rollbacks.
As a state senator, Peters has received a 100% rating on the Illinois Environmental Council’s scorecard each year of his tenure and was awarded the group’s Legislative Leadership Award in 2020. His legislative work has included sponsoring and supporting multiple clean energy and environmental protection measures.
Peters has also said that if elected to Congress, he would support the Green New Deal framework proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which calls for sweeping investments in renewable energy, infrastructure and environmental justice.
“I’m proud to be endorsed by the Sierra Club of Illinois, an organization that has spent generations fighting for our planet and our communities,” Peters said. He added that he believes stronger federal leadership is needed to prioritize climate justice and reduce the influence of polluters.
In addition to the Sierra Club’s backing, Peters has received endorsements from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, among others.
The Democratic primary for Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District will determine who advances to the general election later this year.
