Illinois State Museum opens ‘Here, There’ exhibit in Springfield on March 15 (Springfield, IL)- The Illinois State Museum (ISM) announces the March 15 opening of “Here, There: New Perspectives on the Collection,” a guest-curated exhibition featuring modern and contemporary artworks by Illinois artists, in its second-floor galleries at its Springfield location.

The exhibition is currently on display at ISM’s Lockport Gallery through Feb. 22. For more information, contact the Lockport Gallery at 815-838-7400 or go online. Admission is free.

Three guest curators, Mariela Acuña, Sheridan Tucker Anderson, and Allison Lacher, were invited to explore and bring a fresh perspective to the museum’s nearly 100-year-old collection of Illinois and regional artists. The curators invited Normal-based artist Jason Reblando to exhibit his “Home and Away” series. This project explores the lives of overseas and immigrant Filipino through personal and documentary photographs.

“As a child of Filipino immigrants, I have had a long-abiding and deeply held interest in what makes people move from one place to another,” Reblando said.

Visitors are invited to explore the complexities of the museum’s collection voiced by curators from outside of the state museum. It is one of several major question-driven initiatives by the ISM to find what stories are forgotten, untold, misrepresented, and eager to be heard.

“Our groundwork for this project was to review and identify works by black, Latine, Asian, and LBGTQ+ artists in our collection. This provided the curators a core inventory from which they could ground their research,” said Doug Stapleton, curator of art with the ISM. “The curators selected artworks that speak to themes of nostalgia, home, belonging, and sites of history in American art.”

ISM invites visitors to celebrate the opening of “Here, There: New Perspectives from the Collection” on Saturday, March 15 at the museum’s location at 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield. For more information, please contact the museum at 217-782-7386 or go online. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 1. Admission is free.
