Illinois Freedom Caucus Condemns Senate Passage of Physician-Assisted Suicide Bill (Springfield, IL) – The Illinois Freedom Caucus sharply criticized state lawmakers Friday after the Illinois Senate voted to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients, calling the move a “dark day in Illinois.”

The measure, Senate Bill 1950, would allow adults diagnosed with a qualifying terminal illness to end their lives under medical supervision. The legislation, which passed in the early hours of Friday morning, now heads to the House for further consideration.

In a statement, the Illinois Freedom Caucus accused Democratic lawmakers of prioritizing what it called a “culture of death” over the state’s economic and social challenges.

“Working families are struggling to pay their utility bills, property taxes and gas taxes,” the group said. “Instead of addressing the real challenges facing Illinois families, Illinois Democrats decided to focus on legislation to kill grandpa and grandma.”

The conservative caucus, made up of Republican legislators from across the state, argued that the proposal erodes respect for human life and could lead to broader applications beyond terminal illness.

“There is no dignity or compassion about a person dying alone in a doctor’s office,” the group said. “Life is precious, a fact sane societies have recognized for centuries. Once this legislation becomes law, it will open up a Pandora’s box.”

Supporters of the measure, however, have argued that physician-assisted dying laws provide terminally ill patients with autonomy and relief from prolonged suffering, pointing to similar laws in states such as Oregon, Washington, and California.

Senate Bill 1950 would establish strict eligibility criteria, including multiple medical evaluations and written consent, according to legislative summaries.

The Illinois Freedom Caucus vowed to continue opposing the measure as it moves through the General Assembly, calling it a moral and ethical turning point for the state.
