El Paso Man Charged with Making Threats Against President Donald Trump (Peoria, IL) – A central Illinois man has been charged in federal court with allegedly making threats against President Donald J. Trump, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois.
Federal prosecutors said Derek Lopez, 27, of El Paso, Illinois, was arrested on October 28 and is facing one count of making threats against the president. Lopez was scheduled to appear for preliminary and detention hearings on Monday, November 3, at the federal courthouse in Peoria.
If convicted, Lopez could face up to five years in federal prison.
The investigation was led by the FBI’s Springfield Field Office, with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service, the El Paso Police Department, the Woodford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Illinois State University Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by Criminal Chief Darilynn J. Knauss of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Authorities emphasized that the charge is an allegation and that Lopez is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
