Illinois Celebrates Adoptive Families During Adoption Awareness Month (Chicago, IL) – Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) are honoring adoptive families across the state this November in recognition of Adoption Awareness Month, celebrating thousands of parents who have opened their hearts and homes to children in need.
Over the past decade, 20,313 Illinois youth in state care have been adopted into permanent, loving families — an achievement that DCFS says highlights both the dedication of adoptive parents and the agency’s ongoing efforts to ensure every child grows up in a safe, supportive home.
“Every child deserves a home where they feel loved, supported and safe,” said Governor Pritzker. “The families who choose adoption exemplify the very best of Illinois — compassion, resilience and a belief in the power of community.”
DCFS Director Heidi E. Mueller echoed those sentiments, calling adoption a “transformative act” for both children and parents.
“When parents open their homes, they do more than provide shelter — they offer safety, trust and unconditional care,” Mueller said. “In return, their lives and homes are made immeasurably richer.”
To celebrate the month, courts across Illinois will host special Adoption Day ceremonies to finalize adoptions and honor families who are expanding through adoption. Events will take place November 21 in Cook, Rock Island, and Williamson counties; November 22 in Winnebago County; November 24 in Kane County; and December 19 in Madison County.
During the last fiscal year, 2,492 Illinois children were adopted into permanent homes. Currently, 2,443 youth in care have a permanency goal of adoption.
DCFS offers a variety of supports to help adoptive families succeed, including reimbursement for legal fees, a monthly subsidy, and medical coverage. Many parents begin their journey as licensed foster parents before deciding to adopt.
Families and individuals interested in adoption can visit dcfs.illinois.gov, click “Loving Homes,” and select “Become a Foster or Adoptive Parent.” Profiles of children waiting to be adopted are available through the Heart Gallery of Illinois.
Governor Pritzker’s proclamation reaffirms Illinois’ commitment to ensuring every child has the chance to thrive in a loving, permanent home — a goal DCFS says drives its mission year-round.
