Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. Hospitalized for Observation, Family Says He Is “Doing Well” (Chicago, IL) – The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., the longtime civil rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, was hospitalized Wednesday and is being monitored for progressive supranuclear palsy, a neurological disorder with which he was diagnosed earlier this year, his family announced.

Jackson, 84, remains under observation at Northwestern Hospital, where doctors say he is responding well to treatment, according to a statement released Thursday.

“We are grateful for the medical team at Northwestern Hospital. Reverend Jackson is receiving appropriate treatment,” the family said. “They will continue to monitor his progress and well-being to ensure the best possible care and support.”

The statement noted that Jackson’s family is appreciative of the prayers and messages of support they have received.

Progressive supranuclear palsy is a rare brain disorder that affects balance, movement, and eye coordination. Jackson publicly disclosed the diagnosis in April.

Jackson has been a central figure in American civil rights activism for more than six decades. He founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, a Chicago-based advocacy organization focused on racial, economic, and social justice. The group is now led by his son, Yusef D. Jackson, who serves as chief operating officer.

Further updates on Jackson’s condition are expected as he continues treatment
