Amalgamated Transit Union Ridin’ with Robert Peters for Congress (Chicago, IL) – The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), including Chicago Locals 241 and 308, became the first union to endorse State Sen. Robert Peters for U.S. Congress in Illinois’ 2nd District, where it represents almost 3,000 members.
“Having the endorsement of the hard working members of ATU is important to me,” said Peters, who is chair of the Senate Labor Committee in Springfield. “We need to stand with our public sector and all unions and fight back against attacks on workers’ rights.”
“Robert Peters will be one of the strongest allies of the labor movement and public transit in Congress,” said ATU International President John Costa. “Peters has demonstrated an extraordinary track record of advocacy and public service. As a proven leader and progressive voice for change, he has consistently worked toward creating a more equitable and inclusive Illinois. We look forward to helping send Robert Peters to Washington to represent the people of Illinois 2nd District.”
“CTA bus drivers face serious safety challenges on the job as they make our city run,” said ATU Local 241 President/Business Agent Keith Hill. “Senator Peters has been a key partner in making sure public transit is safe for our drivers and passengers alike, and we know he’ll be our voice in Congress.”
“Robert Peters has helped bring resources to public transportation, and is an ally when it comes to keeping our members safe on the job,” said ATU Local 308 President/Business Agent Pennie McCoach. “Robert knows we need a safe and accessible system of public transit to keep our communities thriving. We’re proud to stand with him in his campaign.”
The ATU said it plans to mobilize its 3000 local members in support of Peters’ campaign. The Democratic primary election is March 17, 2026.
Peters announced his candidacy last week after incumbent Rep. Robin Kelly announced she is running for U.S. Senate.
