Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon Voices Concern Over Removal of U.S. Election Assistance Commission Members (Cook County, IL) – Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon is expressing concern following the removal of the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), saying the move could have implications for election administration across the country.
In a statement released Friday, Gordon described the action as “deeply troubling” for local election officials and emphasized the importance of maintaining the commission’s independence.
“The recent removal of the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) is a deeply troubling development for local election administrators, including the Cook County Clerk’s Office,” Gordon said.
Gordon noted that the commission was established by Congress in 2002 as an independent, bipartisan agency responsible for supporting secure and credible elections nationwide.
“Regardless of political party, this action should concern every American,” she said. “Congress established the EAC in 2002 as an independent, bipartisan commission to strengthen election administration and help states conduct secure and credible elections.”
According to Gordon, the EAC plays a critical role by certifying voting systems, developing election administration guidance and best practices, and providing technical assistance to state and local election officials.
She said the commission has been an important partner for the Cook County Clerk’s Office, particularly in helping advance certification of the county’s electronic poll book system and supporting modernization efforts for election technology.
“The EAC has been an invaluable partner to my office, helping advance the certification of our electronic poll book system and supporting the modernization of the technology we rely on to administer safe, secure, and efficient elections,” Gordon said.
Gordon concluded by stressing the importance of preserving the commission’s independence and technical expertise.
“Preserving the independence and expertise of this institution is essential to maintaining public confidence in our democratic process,” she said.
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission was created through the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to assist state and local election officials by establishing voluntary voting system guidelines, certifying voting equipment, distributing federal election funds, and providing election administration resources.
