Gov. Pritzker Mourns Passing of Former Gov. Jim Edgar (Chicago, IL) – Gov. JB Pritzker on Sunday expressed sorrow over the death of former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, calling him a mentor, friend, and a model of integrity in public service.

“MK and I are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Governor Jim Edgar. Governor Edgar was a model public servant, a devoted father and husband, and an honest and honorable man,” Pritzker said in a statement.

Darren Edgar, a Republican who served as Illinois’ 38th governor from 1991 to 1999 after more than a decade as secretary of state, was remembered for his bipartisan leadership and commitment to the state’s institutions.

“I was lucky enough to consider him a friend and mentor and have found myself drawing from his words of wisdom on countless occasions,” Pritzker said. “His commitment to reaching across the aisle in service of the people of Illinois undeniably made our state better.”

Pritzker noted that Edgar’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the reforms he championed, adding that Illinois flags will be lowered to half-staff in his honor.

“My thoughts are with Brenda, Brad, Elizabeth, and his entire family. May his memory be a blessing,” Pritzker said.

Edgar’s passing marks the loss of a figure widely regarded for fiscal discipline, ethical leadership, and consensus-building during his two terms in office.
