Illinois Democratic Party Chair Praises Supreme Court Ruling on Birthright Citizenship (Springfield, IL) – Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez is applauding a U.S. Supreme Court decision that leaves birthright citizenship in place, calling the ruling a victory for constitutional protections.
In a statement released following the Court’s decision, Hernandez criticized President Donald Trump and efforts to limit automatic citizenship for children born in the United States.
“Today, Donald Trump could not enact his racist goal: narrow who gets to be called an American and vilify everyone else,” Hernandez said.
She argued that ending birthright citizenship would have conflicted with constitutional principles and created uncertainty for families.
“The end of birthright citizenship would have undermined the Constitution, left pregnant women with stateless children, and uprooted entire communities,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez concluded by emphasizing that the Court’s ruling preserves the longstanding interpretation of the Constitution regarding citizenship.
“With this ruling, the lawful truth remains the same: if you’re born in the United States, you’re an American,” she said.
Birthright citizenship is rooted in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to its jurisdiction, are citizens of the United States. The issue has remained the subject of legal and political debate in recent years.
