Illinois Senator Willie Preston to Lead Economic and Cultural Delegation to Ghana (Chicago, IL) — Illinois State Sen. Willie Preston is preparing to lead a delegation of business, education and community leaders to Ghana later this month in an effort to strengthen economic, cultural and educational ties between Illinois and the West African nation.

The trip, known as the Englewood-Ghana Sankofa Economic and Cultural Delegation, will begin March 20 in Accra, Ghana’s capital city. The weeklong visit will focus on building relationships between Illinois leaders and Ghanaian officials, entrepreneurs and educators.

Preston, a Chicago Democrat who represents parts of the city’s South Side, said the trip is intended to deepen long-standing cultural connections while creating new economic opportunities.

“For centuries, the story of African Americans has connected Illinois and Ghana, and now we have the privilege and responsibility to bolster that connection,” Preston said. “This journey represents far more than travel; it represents a bridge between Illinois and Ghana, between commerce and culture, and between past and future.”

The delegation will include representatives from government, business, education and community organizations. Participants are expected to meet with Ghanaian government leaders, business owners, educators and cultural institutions that are helping shape the country’s expanding role in the global economy.

According to Preston, the visit will focus on encouraging partnerships that could lead to business development, educational exchanges and cultural collaboration between the two regions.

Delegates will participate in guided tours, business conferences and networking events designed to showcase Ghana’s growing business environment while also highlighting the country’s cultural heritage. Organizers say the structured meetings and cultural experiences are meant to help Illinois leaders better understand Ghana’s relationship-driven approach to commerce.

Preston said he hopes the trip will lead to long-term partnerships that benefit communities in Illinois while strengthening historical ties between African Americans and Ghana.

“My vision for this delegation is simple, yet powerful: create real and lasting partnerships that benefit the people of Illinois while honoring the deep historical and cultural ties between African Americans and the nation of Ghana,” Preston said.

The initiative is also intended to promote a broader sense of international collaboration, with organizers emphasizing economic development, education partnerships and cultural exchange as key gIllinois Senator Willie Preston to Lead Economic and Cultural Delegation to Ghanaoals of the trip.
