Juliana Stratton Highlights Senate Bid, Pushback Against Trump in WVON Interview (Chicago, IL) – U.S. Senate candidate Juliana Stratton joined Matt McGill on WVON 1690AM this week to outline her campaign priorities and her opposition to President Donald Trump, framing her candidacy as part of a broader fight for healthcare, democracy, and equity.

Stratton, who has served Illinois in statewide office for the past seven years, told listeners she entered the Senate race out of concern for rising threats to healthcare access and democratic institutions. “This was my decision to say, ‘what can I do to lean in in a moment that is very frightening for so many people?’” Stratton said. “We know that we need fighters in Washington, and this is my stepping it up.”

She warned that Trump’s influence is already being felt across the country, citing what she called attacks on healthcare, food assistance, and working families. “Donald Trump has ignited a five-alarm fire, and we are seeing it impact us every single day,” she said. “We have to stand together to push back against the rise of threats and authoritarianism that we are seeing coming out of Washington, D.C. right now.”

A major focus of her campaign, Stratton said, is universal healthcare coverage. Pointing to looming hospital closures in rural Illinois and safety-net hospitals in Chicago, she argued that cuts to Medicaid and other programs will drive up costs and reduce access for everyone. “No one should have to choose between paying rent or going to the doctor,” she said. “Everyone’s healthcare costs are going to go up, and it’s one of the reasons why I want to fight for universal healthcare coverage when I get to the United States Senate.”

Stratton also criticized members of Congress who, in her view, have failed to challenge Trump. “This is a moment that requires courage,” she said. “There are people who are going to lose their healthcare, there are people who are going to lose food assistance because of their representatives who don’t have the courage to stand up to this President. It’s unconscionable, and it is something that I plan to fight back against.”

Framing her campaign as part of a coalition across state and local government, business, faith groups, and community organizations, Stratton said she hopes to bring Illinois’ united front against Trump’s agenda to Washington.
