Rep. Sheehan Condemns Mayor Johnson’s Remarks on Law Enforcement (Homer Glen, IL) – State Rep. Patrick Sheehan (R-Lockport) sharply criticized Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday, condemning remarks in which the mayor referred to law enforcement as a “sickness” that should be “eradicated.”
In a statement, Sheehan, a nearly 20-year police officer before entering politics, called Johnson’s words “reckless, insulting, and dangerous.”
“Law enforcement is NOT a disease,” Sheehan said. “It is the very foundation of public safety, the shield that protects communities from chaos, and the thin line that separates order from anarchy.”
Johnson made his comments during a recent press conference, where he argued that Chicago’s past reliance on policing failed to address the root causes of crime. He contrasted current strategies with the city’s highest murder rates in past decades, while criticizing what he described as the harmful legacy of aggressive policing.
Sheehan said Johnson’s remarks dismissed the sacrifices of officers who served during Chicago’s most violent years. “To stand before the people of Chicago and declare that law enforcement is a ‘sickness’ is an affront to every police officer that has died in the line of duty, every officer who has sworn an oath to protect and serve, and every family that has lost a loved one to violent crime,” he said.
The first-term Republican lawmaker represents Illinois’ 37th District, which includes parts of Will and Cook counties.
