Cook County Jail Takes Precautions Amid Chicago Meningitis Outbreak (Cook County, IL) – Cook County Jail officials are working closely with Cook County Health to identify and protect individuals in custody who may be at increased risk of meningococcal infection following a recent outbreak reported in Chicago, Sheriff Tom Dart announced.

While there have been no confirmed cases of meningitis at the jail, officials said enhanced precautions were put in place after the Chicago Department of Public Health reported 10 cases of Neisseria meningitidis in the city, including two deaths. Health officials noted that Chicago typically sees between 10 and 15 cases of meningococcal disease in an entire year, most often during the winter months.

Public health authorities believe the current outbreak may have originated at a homeless shelter. Because meningococcal disease spreads through close and prolonged contact, congregate living environments such as jails present unique challenges for preventing transmission.

In response, Cook County Jail staff provided medical teams at Cermak Health Services with a list of individuals in custody who self-reported experiencing homelessness during intake. Medical staff are working in coordination with the Chicago Department of Public Health to vaccinate those considered at highest risk, based on housing status or underlying medical conditions.

Medical personnel are also on heightened alert for symptoms of meningitis during intake screenings and among individuals already in custody who may be susceptible to infection.

“Meningitis can be very dangerous, and we are taking this threat very seriously,” Dart said in a statement. “As we demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, aggressive and early interventions and the ability to quickly adapt are critical to successfully combat the spread of disease.”

Dart said the jail’s COVID-19 protocols were previously validated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as best practices for correctional facilities, and he credited Cermak Health Services for its proactive response to the current situation.

According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, meningococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening illness that can initially resemble more common conditions. Early symptoms may include fever, chills, fatigue, and nausea.

Health officials urge individuals to seek medical attention if those symptoms are accompanied by more severe warning signs, such as a stiff neck, sensitivity to light, cold hands and feet, severe body aches, vomiting or diarrhea, or the appearance of a dark purple rash.

Jail officials said they will continue to work closely with public health partners to monitor the situation and protect the health of staff and individuals in custody as the outbreak is investigated.
