Brave Space Alliance Launches ‘Embodied’ Juneteenth and Pride Celebration Highlighting Black Trans Artistry (Chicago, IL) – Brave Space Alliance (BSA), a Black trans-led LGBTQ+ center based on Chicago’s South Side, marked Juneteenth and Pride Month with the debut of “Embodied,” a new celebration dedicated to Black trans, gender-nonconforming, and queer artistry.

Held June 20 at Thalia Hall, the event brought together performers and community members for an evening of drag, burlesque, music, dance, and poetry. Organizers described the showcase as one of the only Black trans-centered Juneteenth celebrations in Chicago.

The inaugural event featured a diverse lineup of artists, including Nikki Patin, BSA’s recently announced chief executive officer. Patin is known for performances on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and for her memoir Working on Me, which received a Pushcart Prize nomination.

Other featured performers included Sasha Love, Nexus J, Luv Ami-Stoole, Sunny Halestorm, Fallon, DMB The Etymology, may5a, Trans Voices Cabaret, Mo Swallowtail and the Tap’Root Fluidity, Wes Andy Sins, Po’Chop, Dywaine Betts, also known as Dario, Jahiem Jones, also known as Prince Hiem Gorgeous Gucci, and choreography by Chameleon, also known as Damon Green.

“Embodied is a love letter to Black trans joy and resilience,” Patin said in a statement. “Juneteenth is a celebration of Black freedom, and that freedom has always included Black trans people — even when the world has tried to tell us otherwise. Embodied exists to make that truth undeniable.”

Patin added that centering Black trans artistry during Juneteenth honors the broader struggle and celebration of liberation.

Brave Space Alliance officials said the event reflects the organization’s ongoing mission to create affirming, culturally responsive spaces and programming for LGBTQ+ residents on Chicago’s South Side. Organizers plan to make Embodied an annual event.

“Performing arts and nightlife are such integral parts of our community’s culture,” said Aicha Chehmani, BSA’s community engagement strategist. “Art is how we express, how we resist, how we love, how we create change. Embodied celebrates the immeasurable impact Black queer community has on dance, music, burlesque, poetry, drag, and culture.”

The event comes as organizations across Chicago continue to host Juneteenth and Pride celebrations that highlight the intersection of Black history, LGBTQ+ identity, and artistic expression.
