Congressional Candidate Donna Miller Criticizes Trump Over Venezuela, Calls on Congress to Act (Chicago, IL) – Congressional candidate Donna Miller sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s actions toward Venezuela, arguing that the president’s use of military force without congressional approval violates the Constitution and underscores the need for Congress to reassert its authority.
In a statement, Miller, who is running in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District, said Trump’s recent attack on Venezuela and the reported abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro demonstrate the dangers of what she described as unchecked presidential power.
“This is an example of what happens when a president has unfettered power,” Miller said. “Congress must do its job.”
Miller urged lawmakers to support the War Powers Act when they return to Washington, saying any attack on another country without congressional authorization is unconstitutional and risks drawing the United States into what she called a “forever war.”
She warned that allowing such actions to go unchecked could set a precedent for further military interventions driven by economic interests rather than national security.
“If we let President Trump get away with invading other countries for the purpose of capturing their resources, he won’t stop with Venezuela,” Miller said, naming Cuba, Panama, Canada and Greenland as nations she said Trump has previously threatened. “This is a president who puts material gain over human life and the cost to everyday Americans.”
Miller said Congress exists to serve as a check on executive power and that failure to do so could endanger democratic institutions.
“We cannot let this president continue without restrictions,” she said. “That is the way our government was set up, and we must make sure that we retain democracy and not reward a wannabe dictator.”
While criticizing the administration’s actions, Miller emphasized her support for the U.S. military, noting that her father, grandfather and uncle all served in the armed forces. She said the issue is not the capability of the military, but the lack of a clear objective or long-term plan.
“We know the United States is capable of executing a flawless mission,” Miller said. “But we can’t get blinded by the razzle dazzle and not see the end game.”
Miller argued that the conflict in Venezuela is primarily about control of oil reserves and enriching wealthy interests, rather than addressing domestic concerns such as rising grocery prices, health care costs, Social Security, jobs or the cost of living.
“Only Congress has the power to declare war,” she said, adding that voters also have a role in electing lawmakers willing to challenge the president. “The American people have the power to elect the next members of Congress who will stand up to Trump. We need Congress to do its job.”
