Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding Illinois Mail Ballot Law (Chicago, IL) – Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon praised a U.S. Supreme Court decision affirming the authority of states, including Illinois, to count mail ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received within the timeframe established by state law.
In a statement released following the ruling, Gordon said the decision reinforces Illinois’ longstanding approach to ensuring eligible voters who comply with election laws have their ballots counted.
“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision affirms what Illinois has long understood: when voters cast their ballots on time and follow the rules, their voices deserve to be heard,” Gordon said.
The court’s decision allows Illinois to continue counting vote-by-mail ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and arrive within the state’s legally established deadline.
Gordon said the policy protects voters from circumstances beyond their control, including postal service delays, and benefits populations that often rely on mail voting, such as seniors, people with disabilities, military personnel and U.S. citizens living overseas.
The Cook County Clerk also emphasized the security measures used in Illinois’ vote-by-mail system, including signature verification, ballot tracking, barcode technology and multiple layers of election security designed to verify ballots and prevent fraud.
“Mail voting is reliable, secure, and an essential part of our democratic process,” Gordon said.
She added that election policies should be based on evidence and the protection of voting rights rather than misinformation regarding mail voting.
“In Illinois, we believe that every eligible voter who follows the rules deserves to have their ballot counted,” Gordon said. “This ruling strengthens our democracy by preserving access to the ballot box and reaffirming that every vote matters.”
Illinois law permits election officials to count mail ballots that are postmarked on or before Election Day and received within the period specified by state election law.
