End Citizens United Endorses Sen. Robert Peters in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District Race (Chicago, IL) – End Citizens United, a national organization focused on campaign finance and ethics reform, has endorsed State Sen. Robert Peters in his bid for Congress in Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District.
The group announced its support on Tuesday, citing Peters’ decision to reject corporate political action committee (PAC) money and his commitment to ethics reforms aimed at reducing the influence of money in politics. Peters has joined End Citizens United’s “Unrig Washington” campaign, which requires candidates to oppose dark money in elections and support a ban on members of Congress trading individual stocks.
“From his early work expanding youth voter participation to his leadership in the Illinois State Senate, Robert Peters has built a career fighting for working families,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller in a statement. “By refusing to take corporate PAC money and committing to real ethics reforms, he is showing the kind of leadership it will take to restore accountability and deliver results for working people.”
Peters said the endorsement comes at a critical moment in the campaign, as outside groups increase their involvement in the race.
“As right-wing super PACs engage in deceptive practices to try to buy this seat, the endorsement of ECU feels particularly important,” Peters said. “I’m grateful to have earned their support as we work together to defend our very democracy.”
Currently serving in the Illinois State Senate, Peters has supported legislation to raise the minimum wage, eliminate the state grocery sales tax, and reduce health care costs through the Illinois Healthcare Protection Act. He has also served for two terms as chair of the Senate Committee on Labor, where he has focused on policies affecting workers and organized labor.
End Citizens United highlighted Peters’ participation in its Unrig Washington pledge as evidence of his commitment to ethics reform. The pledge includes rejecting corporate PAC contributions, backing a ban on congressional stock trading, and strengthening enforcement against undisclosed political spending.
The endorsement adds a national anti-corruption group to Peters’ list of supporters as the race for Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District continues.
