Illinois Senate Schedules Hearing on Soaring Energy Costs (Springfield, IL) – With Illinois residents and businesses facing record-high electricity bills, the Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee will hold a public hearing on Monday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m. to address rising energy costs and supply concerns.

Members of the Illinois Freedom Caucus said the hearing is overdue, pointing to months of warnings about looming energy price spikes and grid reliability issues. The group noted that three months ago, every House Republican member of the House Energy and Environment and Public Utilities Committees signed a letter calling for immediate bipartisan, bi-cameral hearings. That request went unanswered.

“We held multiple press conferences warning of the coming summer energy cost crisis and offered solutions to expand energy production capacity. Our legislation was mothballed,” the caucus said in a statement.

The Republicans argue that Illinois should be an energy leader, citing the state’s top ranking in nuclear power production and its coal reserves. Instead, they say policies enacted under Gov. J.B. Pritzker—particularly the 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which phases out coal and natural gas plants—have made Illinois a net importer of energy.

At the same time, they point to rising demand from new data centers, which receive state tax incentives, as adding further strain to the grid.

The caucus has criticized Democratic energy policies as overly reliant on subsidized wind and solar projects, paired with costly battery storage systems. They argue such measures will only drive prices higher while destabilizing energy reliability.

The upcoming hearing is titled “New Federal Energy Policy and Increasing Summer Rates.” Republican lawmakers expressed concern that the discussion may focus more on assigning blame to federal policies than addressing what they describe as state-level mismanagement.

“Illinoisans deserve an honest conversation about real solutions on how we can deliver affordable, reliable energy to families and businesses,” the caucus said.

A video statement from Reps. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) and Chris Miller (R-Oakland) on the issue is available here.
