Krishnamoorthi Criticizes Trump While Accepting Contributions From MAGA-Aligned Donors (Chicago, IL) – Newly surfaced reporting highlights a tension in U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi’s campaign message, revealing that the Democratic Senate candidate has accepted sizeable financial support from donors and corporations aligned with former President Donald Trump, even as he campaigns on promises to “hold Trump accountable.”
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Krishnamoorthi — currently the fundraising frontrunner in the Democratic primary to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin — has taken more than $90,000 in contributions from individuals tied to Trump or the MAGA movement. The report notes that the Schaumburg Democrat’s donor list includes venture capitalist and Trump adviser Marc Andreessen; Heritage Foundation senior adviser Michael Pillsbury, a Project 2025 contributor; and Shyam Sankar, a Trump adviser and major Republican donor.
Sankar, the chief technology officer at Palantir, has become a focal point of criticism due to the company’s $30 million contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Palantir’s software tools are used to track undocumented immigrants, and reporting from The Washington Post has detailed how the technology accelerates deportation efforts. Sankar has donated at least $260,000 to Republican causes this year, including $250,000 to the Republican National Committee, while also contributing nearly $30,000 to Krishnamoorthi since 2015.
The Sun-Times also reported that Krishnamoorthi’s campaign has accepted more than $120,000 from corporate PACs associated with companies involved in Trump’s new $300 million White House ballroom construction project, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, T-Mobile, Union Pacific, Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, and NextEra Energy.
Krishnamoorthi’s campaign has defended its fundraising approach. A spokesperson told the newspaper that the congressman “welcomes anyone who supports his mission.”
That stance drew criticism from the campaign of Junaid “Juliana” Ahmed, one of Krishnamoorthi’s Democratic primary opponents. Ahmed spokesperson Allison Janowski said the contributions should raise concerns for voters.
“When Congressman Krishnamoorthi says he’d welcome donations from anyone who supports his mission, that includes those profiting off ICE’s terror campaign in Chicago, the authors of the playbook to dismantle the federal government, and the corporations who have capitulated to Trump’s authoritarianism to line their pockets,” Janowski said in a statement. “How can Illinoisans expect him to stand up to Trump in the Senate when he’s being bankrolled by the same people executing the extreme and dangerous MAGA agenda?”
The full Sun-Times report offers additional details about the donors and entities supporting Krishnamoorthi’s Senate bid.
