Op-Ed: Senator Patrick Joyce (August 2025) – As your State Senator, my focus is on listening to the concerns of residents, working to solve problems, and delivering results that make a real difference in people’s lives. This August, I’m proud to share progress on issues ranging from supporting our farmers and veterans to strengthening schools, expanding job training, and celebrating community milestones.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve consistently heard about from local farmers is cropla damage caused by nuisance deer. That’s why I sponsored Senate Bill 710, which was recently signed into law. This measure reforms the deer permit system so farmers can better protect their land. Instead of waiting until after damage occurs, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will now be able to issue deer removal permits based on prior use.

The law also expands youth hunting tags, creating more opportunities for the next generation of responsible hunters. By cutting red tape, this legislation ensures farmers can take action before crop losses mount. It’s the product of grassroots advocacy by Farm Bureaus across Illinois, and I’m grateful for their partnership in getting it done.

Another priority for me is making sure our veterans have the support they need when they return home. I recently joined colleagues in visiting the Road Home Program at Rush Hospital , which provides vital mental health services to veterans and their families. Illinois is investing $1 million into this program to ensure it continues to serve those who have served us.

As I said during our visit, it’s our responsibility as legislators to make sure those who slip through the cracks are found — and programs like Road Home give veterans a true path forward. They stood for us, and it’s our duty to stand with them.

I’m also excited to share good news for our local schools. Eighteen school districts across the 40th District will receive more than $8 million in additional evidence-based funding this year. This funding is part of the 2017 school funding reform that makes resources more equitable by basing allocations on district needs, including enrollment, poverty rates, and special education services. From Park Forest to Bourbonnais and Wilmington, this investment will help ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

For those looking to enter the trades, the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program is now accepting applications for its fifth round of funding. This program provides tuition-free training, stipends, and certifications for underrepresented groups, including women, veterans, and people of color. It’s a powerful tool to build a diverse workforce and connect people to good-paying, long-term careers in construction. Applications are open through Aug. 31, and I encourage anyone interested to apply.

August also brings opportunities to come together as a community. Neighborhoods across the district recently participated in National Night Out , a celebration that strengthens partnerships between residents and law enforcement while promoting public safety. These gatherings remind us of the importance of community, trust, and working together to make our neighborhoods safer.

Finally, I was honored to help break ground on a new fire station for the Manhattan Fire Protection District. This facility will enhance public safety for a growing community and represents the progress we can achieve when local leaders and residents come together with a shared vision.

From passing common-sense legislation to investing in education and public safety, my commitment is to keep delivering results that matter.
