Pritzker Launches $50 Million Grant Program for Community Health Centers (Springfield, IL) – Gov. JB Pritzker on Tuesday announced a new $50 million grant opportunity aimed at supporting the construction and renovation of community health centers across Illinois through the state’s Rebuild Illinois Capital Program.

The funding will be distributed through the Community Health Center Construction Grant Program and is available to Federally Qualified Health Centers and similar providers. State officials said the grants are intended to expand access to health care services, particularly in underserved and rural communities, as federal funding for health programs faces reductions.

Under the program, eligible health care providers may apply for up to $3 million in capital improvement funding to upgrade facilities, expand capacity, or modernize infrastructure. The grants will be administered by the Illinois Capital Development Board in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“While the federal government strips essential healthcare funding from communities in need, Illinois is stepping up to support accessible, high-quality healthcare for families across the state,” Pritzker said in a statement. He added that the funding will help providers improve care and address longstanding health disparities.

Capital Development Board Executive Director TJ Edwards said the program reflects the state’s broader investment in infrastructure and essential services.

“Rebuild Illinois not only supports new and improved infrastructure but also ensures communities in need have access to essential services,” Edwards said. “These capital investments continue to provide Illinoisians with equitable and reliable facilities that will improve health outcomes.”

Community health centers provide primary and preventive care to residents regardless of their ability to pay and serve as a key component of the state’s safety net health system. According to state officials, the construction grant program aligns with Illinois’ efforts to reduce disparities in health care access while upgrading aging facilities.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sameer Vohra said the funding will help ensure more residents can obtain essential services.

“Community health centers are among the most important tools we have to ensure equitable access to care for all Illinoisans,” Vohra said. “This investment will make our communities safer and healthier.”

Previous grants awarded through the program have supported projects such as the renovation of existing buildings to add medical exam rooms and dental clinics, expansion of laboratory space, installation of new signage, and replacement of aging roofs.

Additional information about the Community Health Center Construction Grant Program, including eligibility requirements and application details, is available through the state’s online grant portal.
