Illinois Freedom Caucus Unveils Legislative Package Focused on Taxes, Transparency, and Family Policy (Springfield, IL) – The Illinois Freedom Caucus is promoting a slate of 10 legislative proposals it says are aimed at easing financial burdens, increasing government accountability, and strengthening policies affecting working families across the state.
In a statement released Tuesday, the conservative Republican caucus outlined a range of bills targeting tax relief, election procedures, energy costs, and social policy issues.
The group’s tax proposals include a measure sponsored by Rep. Adam Niemerg, R-Dieterich, that would reduce the state’s individual income tax rate from 4.95% to 3.75% and lower the corporate rate from 7% to 6%. Another proposal, led by Rep. Blaine Wilhour, R-Beecher City, would eliminate Illinois’ estate tax.
“Illinois taxpayers are being fleeced,” Wilhour said in the release. “We have the highest property taxes in the nation and Illinois taxpayers pay the highest combination of state and local taxes in the country. It is time to give them some relief.”
On government reform, the caucus is backing legislation to require voter identification cards for individuals without acceptable photo ID, as well as a proposal aimed at increasing transparency in how taxpayer dollars are distributed to non-governmental organizations.
Another measure, introduced by Rep. Chris Miller, R-Hindsboro, would repeal the state’s Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card requirement. Miller argued the policy places unnecessary burdens on lawful gun owners rather than preventing crime.
“We need secure elections, clear transparency in how our money is being spent and we need to roll back government intrusion in our lives,” Miller said. “The FOID Card does nothing to prevent crimes.”
The caucus is also advancing several proposals it says are designed to support working families. These include legislation to repeal certain energy-related taxes in an effort to lower utility bills, as well as measures addressing immigration enforcement, parental notification requirements for minors seeking abortions, and education-related tax credits.
One proposal would repeal the state’s TRUST Act, which limits local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Another would establish statutory language recognizing two genders, a measure likely to draw significant debate.
Additionally, a bill introduced by Rep. Jed Davis, R-Newark, would allow Illinois to participate in a federal tax credit program aimed at expanding school choice through scholarship contributions.
The Freedom Caucus said the legislative package reflects its priorities of reducing costs, increasing transparency, and reinforcing what it describes as family-centered policies.
The proposals come as lawmakers in Springfield continue to debate a wide range of fiscal and social issues during the current legislative session, with many of the caucus-backed measures expected to face opposition in the Democrat-controlled General Assembly.
