Chicago Public Schools Opens Applications for Free Preschool Programs (Chicago, IL) – Chicago Public Schools will open applications for its free preschool programs for the 2026–27 school year at 10 a.m. on April 7, offering families across the city expanded access to early childhood education.

The district’s preschool programs will be available at 372 elementary schools, serving primarily four-year-olds, along with a limited number of half-day programs for three-year-olds. While applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, CPS officials encourage families to apply within the first three weeks to secure the widest range of options.

Families can apply online through Chicago Early Learning at chicagoearlylearning.org.

CPS Interim CEO and Superintendent Dr. Macquline King emphasized the importance of early education in shaping long-term student success.

“The District’s high-quality preschool programs focus on building strong partnerships with families and honoring the way young children learn best, which is through early engagement and play,” King said. “Together, school leaders, teachers, and parents form the team that gives every child the strongest possible start.”

The no-cost preschool offerings are part of CPS’ broader effort to improve both educational and social outcomes, particularly for students with the greatest needs. The district partners with the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services to provide additional early childhood opportunities at community-based sites serving children from birth to age five.

To help families explore their options, CPS schools will host open houses and community events throughout early April, including during CPS Pre-K Week from April 11 through April 17. These events allow parents to visit schools, meet educators and learn more about program offerings.

District officials also pointed to encouraging academic trends tied to early learning investments. Mid-year i-Ready assessment data released in March shows a higher percentage of CPS students in kindergarten through second grade are performing at or above grade level in both reading and math compared to the previous two school years.

“Our investments in early childhood education are making a real difference,” said Leslie McKinily, CPS Chief of Early Childhood Education. “When we provide Chicago families with access to free, high-quality early learning opportunities, right in their own communities, it helps children build a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success.”

Parents seeking assistance with the application process can call the Chicago Early Learning Hotline at 312-229-1690 for support in English and Spanish. Additional details are available on the CPS website.
