Dolton School District 149 Kicks Off School Year with Chalk Walk and Community Huddle (Dolton, IL) – Students in Dolton School District 149 returned to class Wednesday with a new tradition aimed at building excitement, strengthening family ties, and setting a positive tone for the year ahead.
The inaugural Back to School Huddle & Chalk Walk, part of the district’s Families Matter series, invited parents and guardians to walk their children to school and leave inspirational chalk messages outside school entrances. Principals at each school led morning “huddles,” offering motivational words to students, families, and staff.
“Families are the foundation of our children’s success,” said Wilbur “Will” Tillman, president of the District 149 Board of Education and founder of the Families Matter series. “This event is more than just a first day of school — it’s a community movement to remind every child that they are loved, supported, and capable of greatness.”
The event builds on the success of the district’s Father’s Matter gathering in June, which celebrated fathers and father figures. That celebration included White Sox tickets for attendees and round-trip airfare for six winners, sponsored by High Society Management.
Superintendent Dr. Maureen White said the chalk walk is part of a broader effort to keep families engaged in education. “We know that when families are involved, children thrive,” White said. “This initiative is just one of many ways we’re fostering a supportive environment where students feel inspired to learn and succeed.”
The morning event also offered refreshments and opportunities for families to meet teachers and school leaders. District officials say they plan to make the Back to School Huddle & Chalk Walk an annual tradition.
