Rep. Sheehan Applauds New Law to Track Firefighter Mortality (Homer Glen, IL) – Illinois will soon begin collecting detailed data on firefighter deaths — including suicides and illnesses such as occupational cancer — under a new law co-sponsored by State Rep. Patrick Sheehan (R-Homer Glen).

Senate Bill 1446, which passed the General Assembly unanimously and was signed by the governor earlier this month, requires the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal to start tracking the manner of death for all firefighters no later than July 1, 2026. The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026.

“As a police officer, I know firsthand the sacrifices first responders make to protect our communities,” Sheehan said. “By accurately tracking firefighter mortality, we can better understand the risks they face and work toward policies and resources that protect their health and save lives.”

The measure calls for collecting information on on-duty incidents, job-related illnesses, and long-term health conditions, with a particular emphasis on occupational cancers — a leading cause of firefighter deaths nationwide. Suicide prevention will also be a focus, as research shows first responders face elevated rates of mental health challenges compared to the general population.

“This law ensures the service of our firefighters is honored through accurate records and a clear understanding of the factors that contribute to their loss,” Sheehan said.

The data is expected to guide future policy decisions aimed at improving firefighter health and safety across Illinois.

Rep. Sheehan represents the state’s 37th District, which includes parts of Homer Glen and surrounding communities.
