Illinois Providers Brace for Influx as Planned Parenthood Wisconsin Halts Abortion Services (Chicago, IL) – Illinois abortion providers and advocates say they are prepared to handle an expected increase in patients following Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin’s decision to stop providing abortion services.
The move, announced this week, will leave Wisconsin with only two abortion clinics, both located in a single city, down from five spread across three cities. Advocates warn the reduction will further strain access for patients already facing hurdles across the Midwest.
A coalition of Illinois organizations — including the Chicago Abortion Fund, Family Planning Associates, Hope Clinic, Personal PAC, and Planned Parenthood of Illinois — issued a joint statement Thursday emphasizing their readiness.
“Illinois is prepared,” the statement read. “We’ve experienced dozens of states enacting bans—from Florida to Texas, Indiana, and Missouri—we know how to do this. Collectively we’ve strengthened our clinical capacity, removed barriers to care, and built strong protections for providers and people seeking abortion.”
Illinois has long been a destination for out-of-state patients. In 2024, one in four people who traveled for abortion care nationwide came to Illinois, including thousands from Wisconsin.
Advocates characterized Wisconsin’s shrinking access as part of a broader erosion of reproductive health care since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. They linked the decision to what they called “a backdoor abortion ban,” noting its impact on clinic systems and patients nationwide.
Despite the shifting landscape, Illinois groups said they remain committed to ensuring abortion remains accessible. “We remain strong as a network in Illinois, connected with our partners in Wisconsin, and ready to ensure that Wisconsinites can access the abortions they need, on the timeline that works for them,” the statement said.
