Mother’s Day Reflection: Leadership Lessons from everyone’s First Counsel (Chicago, IL) – Mothers are the anchor of society. There is a reason athletes say “hi” to their moms after winning a championship or reach out whenever they are need help and comfort. Mothers leave a lasting impression in our lives.
But one role mothers serve is often overlooked, according to attorney James Vasselli. That role, he says, is the role of first counsel.
“Before we learned how to negotiate or problem-solve, we absorbed those instincts at home,” Vasselli said. “Many of the values that shape strong leadership were taught around kitchen tables, during difficult conversations, and through quiet examples of sacrifice and resilience.”
Vasselli notes the strongest communities are built on principles that great mothers embody daily: protection, accountability, patience, adaptability, and selflessness.
“At Vasselli Law, we see these values reflected constantly in local government,” Vasselli said. “Municipal leadership transcends ordinances and budgets; it is fundamentally about stewardship. It’s about protecting neighborhoods, preserving public trust, and making decisions today that shape the lives of future generations, and these are all values instilled in us at an early age by our mothers.”
He says thriving communities require individuals who care deeply.
“The qualities that define strong mothers often define strong public servants,” Vasselli said. “These responsibilities require more than just technical knowledge; they necessitate emotional intelligence and long-term thinking. Much like our home lives, the best local governments are built by those willing to do the difficult, often invisible work that keeps communities functioning.”
Some of the not-so glamourous work includes:
- Addressing infrastructure issues before they escalate into crises
- Navigating conflicts while maintaining a broader perspective
- Protecting taxpayers while investing in growth
- Creating safe environments for families
- Planning for the future, not just the present
As communities tackle these challenges, the Vasselli Law team is a trusted partner to help leaders navigate legal decisions that intersect with human impact.
“Our goal is never just legal compliance,” Vasselli said. “It’s about helping communities’ function effectively and responsibly. Trust is built the same way strong families are built through consistency, communication, and showing up when it matters most.”
Vasselli says motherhood often goes unrecognized for the leadership skills it demands.
“Mothers manage competing priorities, de-escalate conflicts, advocate fiercely, and make tough decisions under pressure,” he said. “These dynamics also exist in municipal government. The reality is public leaders often must make unpopular decisions for the long-term health of the community, which takes courage and perspective. Much like motherhood, real success is measured not by applause, but by stability, opportunity, and whether residents feel their community is moving in the right direction. But while mothers deserve to be honored year-round – let’s give them the applause they deserve this Mother’s Day.”
