Parents to Rally for Fair CPS Funding at Upcoming Town Hall (Chicago, IL) – Parents and community leaders are coming together Monday evening to demand a more equitable funding system for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), as part of an invitation-only town hall at Grace Memorial Church in North Lawndale.

The event, titled Parental Fight for Equitable CPS Funding, will take place at 5 p.m. on October 27 at 1457 S. Kenneth Ave. Hosted by Pastor Marvin Hunter, the discussion aims to address long-standing concerns about funding disparities within District 299 — the boundary that encompasses Chicago’s public school system.

Former Chicago Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel will join the panel, along with John Scott, Director of Board Relations and Community Development; education advocate and teacher Ellen Rosenfeld; Pastor Hunter; and Denita Sanders, president of the Chi North Lawndale Chamber of Commerce. The discussion will be moderated by Hermene Hartman, founder and host of INDIGO.

“I want to raise the question about the unfair public school funding structure for District 299, which is Chicago, and why homeowners are not getting their fair share of return on our investment,” Pastor Hunter said. “We want a fair and equitable school funding system. They know how to fix it, but the question is, why won’t they do so?”

In addition to school funding, the panel will touch on the upcoming 2026 election, when Chicago voters will elect all 21 members of the city’s school board for the first time in history — a milestone in the city’s move toward greater educational accountability and community representation.

The town hall is expected to draw parents, educators, and residents eager to have their voices heard as Chicago faces a pivotal moment in shaping the future of its public schools.
