Rep. Sheehan Praises Trump Executive Order Targeting Cashless Bail (Homer Glen, IL) – State Representative Patrick Sheehan (R-Homer Glen), a longtime law enforcement officer, is applauding President Donald Trump’s new executive order that withholds federal funding from jurisdictions that do not comply with efforts to end cashless bail.

Illinois became the first state in the nation to eliminate cash bail under the SAFE-T Act, a move Sheehan has consistently opposed. He argues the law has led to violent offenders being released shortly after arrest, creating what he described as a “revolving door” of crime.

“As someone who has spent almost two decades on the front lines of law enforcement, I’ve seen firsthand how dangerous the revolving door of cashless bail has become,” Sheehan said in a statement. “Countless communities have suffered the consequences—violent offenders walking free, victims retraumatized, and officers re-arresting the same criminals again and again. This is chaos.”

Sheehan called Trump’s action “decisive,” saying it restores accountability and puts public safety ahead of political agendas. He urged Governor JB Pritzker and legislative Democrats to work with Republicans on revisiting the state’s policy.

“We’re losing federal funding because of this reckless policy, so it’s about time we sit down together and make it right,” Sheehan said.

Sheehan, who represents Illinois’ 37th District, has been a vocal critic of the SAFE-T Act since its passage, warning that ending cash bail would embolden criminals and undermine law enforcement efforts.
