Solo Show ‘I Killed Andy Breitbart’ Returns to Chicago for Limited Engagement (Chicago, IL) – A politically charged and darkly comedic solo performance is returning to Chicago for a limited three-week run this spring.
I Killed Andy Breitbart, written and performed by Chicago-based playwright Pam Dickler and directed by veteran theater artist Drew Martin, will be staged at The Apollo Theater Studio from May 2 through May 17, 2026. The 75-minute production will run Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m.
The play revisits a little-known chapter of the 2012 presidential election cycle, when conservative media figure Andrew Breitbart spotlighted a 1998 Chicago theater production connected to then-State Senator Barack Obama just hours before Breitbart’s death. What followed, according to the production, was a whirlwind of media attention and political controversy that unexpectedly ensnared a small Chicago theater company.
Dickler’s solo show blends satire with personal storytelling, exploring how quickly individuals can become caught in the crosscurrents of political narratives and online misinformation. The production draws from real events surrounding Terrapin Theatre’s The Love Song of Saul Alinsky and its post-show panel featuring Obama.
Originally developed through Stage Left Theatre’s New Play Development program, I Killed Andy Breitbart debuted in Chicago in November 2024 as part of SOLO SUNDAY, where it sold out its initial performances. The show later had limited runs at the Apollo Theater and the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2025.
Organizers describe the piece as both timely and reflective, emphasizing themes of political discourse, media influence, and the importance of individual voices in shaping public narratives.
Performances will take place at The Apollo Theater Studio, located at 2550 N. Lincoln Ave. The venue includes paid lot and street parking, though it is not wheelchair accessible due to stairs.
Tickets are priced at $25 and are available through Ticketmaster.
Dickler, a Chicago resident and Syracuse University graduate, has an extensive background in playwriting and comedy, with works staged in festivals and theaters across the country. Director Drew Martin brings more than three decades of experience in Chicago theater, including multiple Jeff Award-winning productions.
