Roseland Ceasefire Looks to Bring Multiple Generations Together for First Fundraiser During National Anti-Violence Month (Calumet City, IL) – For nearly 20 years, the Roseland Ceasefire Project has been a welcomed presence in the Roseland, Pullman and West Pullman communities interrupting violence and stopping retaliatory behavior whenever possible. For the first time, the far South Side organization is hosting two fundraisers in June during National Anti-Violence Prevention Month to bring residents of all ages together and bring attention to the services it provides.
Starting Saturday, June 7, 2025, an Anti-Violence Basketball Tournament will take place from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pullman Community Center, 10355 S. Woodlawn Avenue. The next day, local choirs will raise their voices during a gospel music concert at eta Creative Arts Foundation, 7558 S. Chicago Avenue.
So far, the teams confirmed are: Thornridge High School, Dwight D. Eisenhower High School, Corliss High School and Christian Fenger Academy High School. The choirs performing are: Travis Crockett & the Powerful Voices of Praise, Sidney Buckner & YIU, Erik Kurt & True Worship and Joshua Cooper & 1-Akord.
Roseland Ceasefire was founded in 2006 as part of the organization started by Dr. Gary Slutkin at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Ceasefire model is to treat gun violence as a health epidemic. Over the years the theory of treating gun violence as a major public health crisis has gained increasing acceptance in the United States.
After training under Dr. Slutkin, Roseland Ceasefire’s founder and CEO, Bob Jackson, was assigned to the Chicago Southland, based on funding support from the Illinois General Assembly. As a result, the organization’s outreach has grown to include Harvey, Markham, Ford Heights, Calumet City, Calumet Park, Riverdale and Park Forest.
“History has shown us that gun violence increases during the summer. We want to use these two events as a way to bring multi-generations together,” explains Jackson. “In addition to being a fundraiser, we also want it to be a fun-raiser so South Side residents can enjoy the summer months.”
Roseland Ceasefire employes outreach workers and has programs to help young offenders with anger management, housing and work readiness training.
